The Captain's Locker

August 2nd is a memorable day for me. For one, because it’s my Mother’s birthday. But the other was because of what happened in 1979. It was the day that Yankee catcher and captain Thurman Munson died in a plane crash. Yankee Stadium plays a great tribute video but I can’t find it on Youtube. None of the tributes I found there really did it justice.

Rockies OF CarGo hopes to return from his wrist injury on Saturday.

In good news/bad news for the Rockies, star SS Troy Tulowitzki left Tuesday night’s game in the 8th inning after injuring the pinky finger on his throwing hand.  He was 0-2 with a walk at that point in the game.

Marlins SS HanRam left Tuesday night’s game with a sprained shoulder.

Dodgers rookie SP Rubby De La Rosa will need Tommy John surgery.  Expect him to miss most if not all of the 2012 season as well.

White Sox 1B Paul Konerko remained out after taking a pitch to the knee over the weekend.

Orioles SP Jake Arrieta is having his next scheduled start on Saturday vs Toronto skipped.  He is dealing with bone spurs on his elbow and his season could be in jeopardy.

Mets SP Johan Santana was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Thursday due to lingering soreness in his left shoulder.

They call him Bruce too. Reds OF Jay Bruce has 9 homers in his last 14 games.

In the Reds 4-3 win over the Brewers, OF Jay Bruce went 1-4 with his NL-leading 17th homer and his NL-leading 45th & 46th RBI. 1B Joey Votto contributed a 3-4 night with a homer & 3 RBI. Could it be back-to-back NL MVPs for the Reds?

Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano was placed on the DL with a quad injury.

Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez is still out with lower back/upper leg pain.  Florida will make a decision on Friday whether to DL him or not if his condition doesn’t improve.

Padres OF Cameron Maybin was placed on the DL.

Cardinals SP Kyle McClellan went on the DL with an injured hip.

Cardinals OF Matt Holliday will go on the DL Thursday with a quad injury.

Angels SP Dan Haren tweaked his back on Wednesday while throwing a bullpen session.  His next start is in jeopardy.  And Al Yankovic lost on Jeopardy, baby.

Mets SS Jose Reyes will return from the bereavement list on Thursday.

Phillies OF Shane “The Flyin Hawaiian” Victorino will come off the DL on Friday.

Rockies rookie SP Juan Nicasio will start Friday vs the Giants.

Rangers SP Matt Harrison will have his Thursday start skipped due to a blister.

Not sure if he suffered the injury on this play or not

Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval is off to a great start this season, after having a rough 2nd year in the bigs. Unfortunately he’s out at least 4-6 weeks after suffering a fractured hamate bone. That’s the same injury that’s kept Phillies prospect Dominic Brown sidelined all season.

In more positive injury news, Rays 3B Evan Longoria is hoping to return to the lineup on Tuesday.

Brewers SP Zack Grienke is targeting May 4th for his return.

Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez and Indians OF Grady Sizemore both received Saturday off as a rest day.

Indians DH Travis Hafner sat out on Saturday again with an ankle injury.  That’s the 3rd straight game Pronk has missed.

Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa has relegated RP Ryan Franklin to long relief for the near future, leaving him as useless for fantasy purposes as rehab is for Lindsay Lohan.

Red Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis left Saturday’s game after injuring the same hip you read about on FB2K on Thursday night.

Pirates OF Jose Tabata left the game in the first inning with hamstring tightness.  I’m sure running away from his crazy wife/gf doesn’t help.

Hey it is 4/4 today. Paying homage to The Man...just don't let him near the Queen!!

So I’ve been telling you all along not to panic…it’s only the first week of the season. Hitters are very streaky. What about pitchers you ask? I wouldn’t overreact over pitching debuts either. But what you can do is target the owners that do.  Look for someone in your league with a trigger finger like Raylan Givens and make your move.  Here’s some guys to target…
