Greatest Yankee ever??

July 9,2011 will forever be known as Derek Jeter Day.  Jeter entered Saturday’s game at 2,998 career hits.  One 5-5 game later, he became the 28th member of baseball’s 3,000 hit club.  He also because the 2nd player ever to hit a home run for his 3,000th hit, former teammate  Wade Boggs being the first.  He’s also the ONLY Yankee to have 3000 hits.  Think about that for a minute.  Of all the members of Cooperstown in hats with the interlocking NY and the pinstripes, Jeter is the only one with 3000 hits in his career.

Saturday afternoon, after singling in the first inning for hit #2,999, he came up in the bottom of the fourth and took a David Price slider deep into the left field bleachers on a 3-2 pitch.  It was a no-doubter and it set off bedlam in the stands.  23 year old Christian Lopez of Highland Mills, NY was the lucky fan to catch the souvenir.  He gave the ball back to Jeter, saying he earned it and it never occurred to him to keep it.  The Yankees rewarded him with 4 tickets to every game for the rest of the year and some signed Derek Jeter memorabilia.  3 balls, 3 bats & 2 jerseys all signed by Jeter.

Of course, Jeter wasn’t done..his 5th hit of the day came in the bottom of the eighth inning of a 4-4 game.  He singled in the winning run in a perfect day for the Yankee captain.  The Yankees beat their division rival Tampa Bay Rays 5-4.  Stay tuned to the HBO documentary regarding his pursuit of history.

Hey Walleye! You see what Berkman did tonight?

Cardinals OF Lance Berkman went 2-5 with 2 homers and 3 RBI in the Cardinals 9-6 win over the Orioles. Big Puma hit a homer from each side of the plate. Fellow OF John Jay went 3-5 with a homer & 3 RBI. Orioles SP Brian Matusz gave up 8 runs on 9 hits in 3 1/3 innings and was sent down to AAA after the game. Baltimore OF Nelson Reimold went 2-4 with a homer & 4 RBI. 3B Mark Reynolds went 2-4 with a homer, 2 runs & 2 RBI.  Berkman is having a strong year with the Cardinals after struggling with the Yankees after being traded to them last season…

Mets SP Jon Niese has overcome his heart issues and is well enough to start on Friday against the Yankees.  He must have went to Donovan McNabb’s doctor to get clearance.

Yankees SP Bartolo Colon will come off the DL and start Saturday against the Mets.  Interesting…that big body coming off a hamstring injury and he’s making his first start back in an NL park where he will have to bat & run the bases?  Interesting!

Yankee SS Derek Jeter will return from his calf injury and resume his quest for 3000 hits when he comes off the DL on Monday.

Mariners SP Erik Bedard went on the DL with a knee injury.  Most of us had shoulder in the office injury pool.

The Phillies lost yet another closer when Ryan Madson injured his hand on a comeback and went on the DL.  He joins fellow closers Brad Lidge and Jose Contreras on the disabled list.  Look for youngster Antonio Bastardo to take over closer duties.  Yes that’s his real name.

A’s SP Rich Harden will come off the DL and make his season debut against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Pink slip day on Thursday as Diamondbacks 3B Melvin Mora, Cardinals RP and former All Star closer Ryan Franklin, Cubs SP Doug Davis, and Red Sox OF Mike Cameron were all cut today.

Simply known as THE DIVE..unfortunately MLB forbids videos of their highlights on Youtube or something, this video is something else.

Yankees SS Derek Jeter was placed on the 15 day DL with a strained calf. He currently stands at 2,994 career hits, needing 6 to hit 3,000. The Yankees won the first game he spent on the shelf 12-4 over the Rangers. They handed Texas SP Alexi Ogando his first loss of the season, he’s now 7-1. He only lasted 1 2/3 innings and gave up 6 runs on 6 hits. Yankee OF Curtis Granderson went 2-4 with his 21st homer tying Joey Bats for the Major League lead.

A’s SP Brett Anderson actually received GOOD news from his visit to world renown Dr. James Andrews.  No Tommy John surgery is needed, just 6 weeks of rehab.

Yankees C Russell Martin missed another game with back stiffness.

Twins 1B Justin Morneau remained out with his wrist problem.

Braves rookie 1B Freddie Freeman missed Tuesday night’s game with an oblique strain.

Watch that last's a doozy!

It was May of 2010 when Angels 1B Kendry Morales hit a walk off grand slam against the Seattle Mariners. The Angels won the game 5-1 that day, but they lost their slugger for the season. Now, a full year later, news has come out that they will be without Morales for the entire 2011 season as well.  His fractured ankle has healed, but scar tissue has developed on that left ankle and needs to be removed.  Mark Trumbo will be the Angels 1B all season.

In other injury news :

Cubs C Geovany Soto was placed on the DL with a groin strain

Brewers OF Ryan Braun is day to day with a left ankle contusion

Yankees 2B Robinson Cano was beaned in the head and left the game Wednesday night.

Blue Jays 1B Adam Lind hopes to be back on Friday.

Marlins OF Logan Morrison will be activated from the DL Friday.

Braves OF Jason Heyward hopes to return by the weekend from his shoulder injury.

A’s SP Dallas Braden is having shoulder surgery and is out for the season.

Rays OF BJ Upton is serving his 2 game suspension Thursday and Friday.  Wait what?  Wasn’t that last week?  Yes…he appealed the suspension.

Fans celebrate the triumphant return of FB2K

Finally….FB2K has come back to  Yes it’s true…it’s DAMN true. There are rumors circulating the internet about PlaxicoAgrees showing up all over a MAJOR and I mean MAJOR sports network’s website. I can neither confirm nor deny anything at this time. Check back for an official statement thru the site at a later date.
Now onto some injury news :
White Sox SP Jake Peavy will return from the DL and make his first start of the season Wednesday vs the Angels. Look for Ozzie to give him around 90 pitches at most.
Angels OF Vernon Wells went on the DL with a right groin strain. Howie Kendrick of all people played LF for the Angels Tuesday night. Wait what?
New York Mets 1B Ike Davis has a strained left calf.
Braves OF Jason Heyward will have an MRI after injuring his right shoulder.
Cubs C Geovany Soto left in the first inning with what they are calling a left groin strain.
Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez missed Tuesday night’s game against the Dodgers after coming back from his quad injury on Monday night.
Phillies C Carlos Ruiz is due back from the DL on Friday.

Really? All I did was take the weekend off. I think LeBron had a better reaction when he returned to Cleveland...

The millions AND MILLIONS of my fans were not happy I took a hiatus.   I have to admit to feeling a bit out of sorts today. Feels like we missed so much. Without further ado let’s start with what me missed this past weekend. Not much right? Except …
A Justin Verlander no-hitter against the Blue Jays. He struck out 4 and walked 1 in the Tigers 9-0 victory Saturday.
Derek Jeter had 4 hits including his first 2 homers of the season on Sunday in the Yankees 12-5 victory over the Rangers. Backup C Francisco Cervelli added a grand slam for his first homer of the year. First homer in several years I believe.
The Major League debut of Braves SP Julio Teheran who lost his first big league start against the Phillies. His line wasn’t pretty…4 2/3 IP, 4 H, 3R, 2 BB & only 1 K. But scouts were impressed by the 20 year old. He’ll be back.
Also making his ML debut over the weekend was the first of the Royals prized prospects 1B Eric Hosmer. He went 3-9 over the weekend with a double, a run scored, RBI, 3 walks and a SB.
Braves SP Derek Lowe outdueled Phillies SP Cliff Lee on Saturday. If not for a blister on his right foot, who knows what would have happened. Lowe settled for a 2 hit shutout and had to leave in the 7th. Cliff Lee went 7 innings and gave up 3 runs on 9 hits but had a career high 16 strikeouts. Also the most by a SP in the majors so far this season.

Dodgers OF Andre Ethier had his hit streak ended at 30 games.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto won his season debut for the Reds going 6 shutout innings allowing 5 hits with a walk & 4 Ks.

If you're looking for some light reading....

Tigers SP Max Scherzer threw 8 innings of shutout ball in beating the Yankees 4-0. He allowed only 4 hits with 2 walks and 9 Ks. He’s 4-0 on the season with 46 Ks in 45 2/3 IP. Tigers OF Magglio Ordonez hit his first homer of the season and doubled his RBI total from 2 to 4. DH Victor Martinez returned to the lineup and went 1-3 with a walk and a run.  Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez was 0-4 with 2 Ks & is in the midst of a 5-40 slump that has seen his average drop to .256.  What the H?

Giants OF Andres Torres hopes to return from the DL on Friday.

Mets OF Jason Bay will return from paternity leave on Thursday.

Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez missed Wednesday game with a quad injury.

Rangers OF Nelson Cruz also missed his game Wednesday with a quad injury.  You know they are teammates on one of my teams.

Dodgers OF Andre Ethier is in the midst of a 29 game hitting streak and hoped to extend it to 30 Wednesday afternoon.  But he sat out the game with left elbow inflammation.  Wait what?

Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton has been shut down with elbow soreness.  Look for Vincente Padilla to vulture some saves.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto will return on Sunday, not Saturday as previously reported on FB2K.

Blue Jays 2B Aaron Hill will return from the DL on Sunday.

Blue Jays lefty SP Ricky Romero will have his Thursday start pushed back to Sunday due to a sore oblique.

Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista hopes to return to the lineup Sunday as well.  Lots of new faces out there for Toronto on Sunday.  Maybe they should wear name tags?

Yankees SS Derek Jeter left the game in the 8th inning with a sore right hip.
