Yankees over Red Sox yet again

Yankees 2B Robinson Cano won the 2011 State Farm Home Run Derby by beating Red Sox 1B Adrian Gonzalez 12-11 in the Final Round. Both hitters set a record for most homers in a final round. A-Gone obviously set his first, and Cano broke it. Both slugged 20 homers thru the first 2 rounds. Brewers 1B and NL team captain Prince Fielder hit the longest homer of the night measured at 474 feet.  Cano’s father Jose, a former major league pitcher, pitched to Cano & Big Papi for the AL team.

After the jump is a video of the catch of the night, and also a preview of the starting lineups for Tuesday’s All Star Game.

A DH has to keep himself busy while not playing the field...

The Red Sox lost to the Padres 5-4 and their lead in the AL East over the Yankees shrunk to 1 game.  The win broke a 6 game losing streak for San Diego.  Former Padre 1B A-Gone went 1-5 with an RBI..he now leads the major leagues with 68.  Big Papi went 0-5 but stole a base!  Wish we had footage of that.  It was his first one since 2008 or something like that.

Stay tuned to the end of the post for an update from our brand new reporter in the field.

INJURY NEWS

Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols is on the DL with a fractured forearm.  He is rumored to miss anywhere between 4 & 7 weeks.  Might as well get a weatherman to predict his return date.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto had his start skipped Monday night due to a stiff neck and should start one of the games on Wednesday.

Red Sox SP Josh Beckett missed his start on Tuesday night due to an illness.  They are hoping he can return for his next scheduled start on Saturday.

Astros OF Hunter Pence missed Tuesday’s game as well with an elbow injury.

Rangers C Yorvit Torreabla missed Monday & Tuesday’s games due to dehydration.

Orioles SP Jake Arrieta will possibly have his next turn in the rotation skipped.

Brewers SP Shaun Marcum will start Wednesday, and White Sox SP Jake Peavy will come off the DL & start Wednesday as well.

Beware of the Pookas & Fygars!!

Orioles OF Adam (Dig Dug) Jones hit the first walk-off homer of his career off of Royals closer Joakim Soria. He’s not Pac Man, so he’s Dig Dug. I didn’t make up the nickname but it’s still pretty good. Alfredo Simon picked up the win, it was his season debut since he has been held up in the Dominican Republic because he has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Wait what? Usually guys miss time with injuries, or maybe visa issues…but a (gasp) murder??? Soria came on with a 5-3 lead and gave up 3 runs & 3 hits to blow the save, and the first major league win for Royals rookie Danny Duffy. Duffy went 5 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks & 6 Ks.  The Orioles were 0-21 in games in which they were trailing after 8 innings this season.

INJURY NEWS

Cubs SP Matt Garza was placed on the DL with an elbow injury.

Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa is out for the season after injury his elbow today against the Diamonbacks.

Mets OF Jason Bay was 0-3 Tuesday before leaving the game with a strained right calf.

Indians SP Mitch Talbot will come off the DL to start Wednesday against the Red Sox.

New face of baseball?? He's likely relegated back to pinch hitting duty after tonight...

Joe Blanton was supposed to start Thursday night’s game against the Rockies. He was scratched from this start due to elbow soreness. The same elbow that landed him on the DL earlier this season. Kyle Kendrick took his place. For the Rockies, 1B Todd Helton tweaked his back sliding into home plate on Wednesday night, so Jason Giambi and his .194 average on the season took his place. It is now where we enter THE TWILIGHT ZONE. The Rockies won the game 7-1. Kendrick gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 3 innings. But that’s not the story here. 35 year old Jason Giambi hit 3 homers and had 7 RBIs. Wait what? He tied his career high in RBIs and became the 2nd oldest player in MLB history to hit 3 homers in a game. It was also his first hit since April 10th.

INJURY NEWS

Cardinals OF Matt Holliday missed Thursday’s game against the Astros but will most likely be in the lineup on Friday.  OF Lance Berkman on the other hand, is day to day.  And rounding out the Cardinals MASH unit of an outfield, Colby Rasmus is back on Thursday.  Got it?  I think it’s easier to remember what the different color zones in an airport are for.

A’s SP Tyson Ross made it thru 7 pitches before leaving the game with a left oblique strain.  To literally add insult to injury, he took the loss in the game.

Dodgers interim – and I use the term loosely – closer Vincente Padilla was placed on the DL with a forearm injury.  Look for Matt Guerrier to take over closing duties.  Jonathan Broxton is as close to taking over as Andy Bernard is to managing Dunder Mifflin.

Orioles 2B Brian Roberts was placed on the 7…yes 7-day DL with the new concussion mandate put into effect this year.  Will be interesting to see if Yankee OF Chris Dickerson ends up there as well.

Brewers OF Ryan Braun left Thursday night’s game with a sore left shoulder.

Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez left Thursday’s game with left groin tightness.  They are calling him day to day.

Phillies OF Shane Victorino will likely hit the DL on Friday with a bad hammy.

In some good news…FINALLY!  Rangers OF Josh Hamilton is hoping to return Monday.  They are saying the same for OF Nelson Cruz.  Check Vegas for the lines on who returns first….
