The Captain's Locker

August 2nd is a memorable day for me. For one, because it’s my Mother’s birthday. But the other was because of what happened in 1979. It was the day that Yankee catcher and captain Thurman Munson died in a plane crash. Yankee Stadium plays a great tribute video but I can’t find it on Youtube. None of the tributes I found there really did it justice.

Rockies OF CarGo hopes to return from his wrist injury on Saturday.

In good news/bad news for the Rockies, star SS Troy Tulowitzki left Tuesday night’s game in the 8th inning after injuring the pinky finger on his throwing hand.  He was 0-2 with a walk at that point in the game.

Marlins SS HanRam left Tuesday night’s game with a sprained shoulder.

Dodgers rookie SP Rubby De La Rosa will need Tommy John surgery.  Expect him to miss most if not all of the 2012 season as well.

White Sox 1B Paul Konerko remained out after taking a pitch to the knee over the weekend.

Orioles SP Jake Arrieta is having his next scheduled start on Saturday vs Toronto skipped.  He is dealing with bone spurs on his elbow and his season could be in jeopardy.

Mets SP Johan Santana was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Thursday due to lingering soreness in his left shoulder.

Hey Walleye! You see what Berkman did tonight?

Cardinals OF Lance Berkman went 2-5 with 2 homers and 3 RBI in the Cardinals 9-6 win over the Orioles. Big Puma hit a homer from each side of the plate. Fellow OF John Jay went 3-5 with a homer & 3 RBI. Orioles SP Brian Matusz gave up 8 runs on 9 hits in 3 1/3 innings and was sent down to AAA after the game. Baltimore OF Nelson Reimold went 2-4 with a homer & 4 RBI. 3B Mark Reynolds went 2-4 with a homer, 2 runs & 2 RBI.  Berkman is having a strong year with the Cardinals after struggling with the Yankees after being traded to them last season…

Mets SP Jon Niese has overcome his heart issues and is well enough to start on Friday against the Yankees.  He must have went to Donovan McNabb’s doctor to get clearance.

Yankees SP Bartolo Colon will come off the DL and start Saturday against the Mets.  Interesting…that big body coming off a hamstring injury and he’s making his first start back in an NL park where he will have to bat & run the bases?  Interesting!

Yankee SS Derek Jeter will return from his calf injury and resume his quest for 3000 hits when he comes off the DL on Monday.

Mariners SP Erik Bedard went on the DL with a knee injury.  Most of us had shoulder in the office injury pool.

The Phillies lost yet another closer when Ryan Madson injured his hand on a comeback and went on the DL.  He joins fellow closers Brad Lidge and Jose Contreras on the disabled list.  Look for youngster Antonio Bastardo to take over closer duties.  Yes that’s his real name.

A’s SP Rich Harden will come off the DL and make his season debut against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Pink slip day on Thursday as Diamondbacks 3B Melvin Mora, Cardinals RP and former All Star closer Ryan Franklin, Cubs SP Doug Davis, and Red Sox OF Mike Cameron were all cut today.

Chris Heisley representing Team USA

The Yankees & Reds split a doubleheader on Wednesday with the Yankees winning the first game 4-2 & the Reds avoiding the sweep by taking the nightcap 10-2. The Game 1 heroes for the Yankees were SP Freddy Garcia who evened his record at 6-6 & went 7 innings and allowed 0 ERs, 7 hits, a walk & 4 Ks. C Jorge Posada broke a 2-2 tie with a 2-run homer. It was his first homer since 4/23. In Game 2 Johnny Cueto went 7 innings and allowed a run on just 2 hits with 3 walks & 6 Ks. Chris Heisley took advantage of the playing time and hit 3 homers and drove in 5 runs. It was his first career multi-homer game. It was also the first time the Yankees have given up a 3 homer game to anyone in interleague play. The last player to hit 3 homers in a game against the Yankees was Kevin Millar in 2004. The Reds are 2-7 against the AL so far this season.

Pirates SP Charlie Morton is having his next start skipped due to fatigue.

Twins RP Joe Nathan hopes to return on Friday.

Cardinals 3B David Freese will come off the DL on Monday.

Astros OF Hunter Pence missed another game due to his elbow injury.  With the team’s off day on Thursday, he’s hoping to return to the lineup on Friday.

Angels OF Torii Hunter had to leave the game after crashing into the OF wall.  He is dealing with some bruised ribs and may miss some time.

A DH has to keep himself busy while not playing the field...

The Red Sox lost to the Padres 5-4 and their lead in the AL East over the Yankees shrunk to 1 game.  The win broke a 6 game losing streak for San Diego.  Former Padre 1B A-Gone went 1-5 with an RBI..he now leads the major leagues with 68.  Big Papi went 0-5 but stole a base!  Wish we had footage of that.  It was his first one since 2008 or something like that.

Stay tuned to the end of the post for an update from our brand new reporter in the field.

Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols is on the DL with a fractured forearm.  He is rumored to miss anywhere between 4 & 7 weeks.  Might as well get a weatherman to predict his return date.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto had his start skipped Monday night due to a stiff neck and should start one of the games on Wednesday.

Red Sox SP Josh Beckett missed his start on Tuesday night due to an illness.  They are hoping he can return for his next scheduled start on Saturday.

Astros OF Hunter Pence missed Tuesday’s game as well with an elbow injury.

Rangers C Yorvit Torreabla missed Monday & Tuesday’s games due to dehydration.

Orioles SP Jake Arrieta will possibly have his next turn in the rotation skipped.

Brewers SP Shaun Marcum will start Wednesday, and White Sox SP Jake Peavy will come off the DL & start Wednesday as well.

Even Mr. Hyde couldn't stop the Marlins from losing again.

On Sunday the Florida Marlins named Brandon Hyde as their interim manager.  He took the place of Edwin Rodriguez who resigned.  Unfortunately, the Marlins losing streak continued as they lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 to extend their losing streak to 10 games.  They are now 1-18 in June.  Tampa SP James Shields threw his 2nd straight CG, and his major league leading 5th this season.  He allowed a run on 4 hits with 0 walks & 10 Ks.  Adding to the story on Sunday night the Marlins named Jack McKeon the new manager.  He was the skipper the last time the Marlins won the World Series.  He may have also been the skipper the last time the Cubs won a World Series.  Him or Charlie Manuel I guess.

If you’re too lazy to read all the news you can skip to the end of the article and watch Brian Collins’ summary video.

Astros closer Brandon Lyon is out for the season after bicep surgery

Red Sox OF Carl Crawford was placed on the DL after a hamstring injury.

Red Sox SP Clay Buckholz was put on the DL with a strained lower back.  Andrew Miller was called up from AAA to take his spot in the rotation.

Brewers SP Shaun Marcum has a left flexor strain, but is hoping to make his next start.

Astros OF Hunter Pence is dealing with a left elbow strain and is day to day.

More drama in Miami…Marlins OF Chris Coughlan, originally rumored to have been sent to AAA is now reportedly going on the DL with a knee injury.

Now if I told you one of these guys was baseball's all time home run leader until 2001 which one would you guess? The little one?

The Braves activated Jason Heyward from the DL today.  His entire team didn’t do anything in a 4-0 loss to the Mets.  The Braves had 2 hits, but Heyward didn’t get one of them.  He did walk though in his return.  This will be the last time I try to get a head start and lead with a story before the damn game starts.  Dillon Gee got screwed out of his 8th straight win by an hour & 11 minute rain delay.  Bobby Purnell picked up the W in relief.

The Twins are reporting catcher Joe Mauer will be activated on Friday.

Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano was activated from the DL.

Blue Jays SP Kyle Drabek was optioned to AAA.

The Astros placed RP Brandon Lyon on the DL with biceps tendonitis.

I threw everyone off today by going with the good news first.  Oh and another special surprise…I was able to track down The Derek Jeter DIVE video…unfortunately it’s a link…progress??
