The Dallas Mavericks became America's Team over the past week...

The Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat 105-95 Sunday night in Game 6 in Miami to win the 2011 NBA Championship 4 games to 2. It was the first championship for the Mavericks franchise, and every player on the team for that matter. Rick Carlisle also joined a handful of coaches to win a ring as a player and as a coach.  Jason Kidd is in his 17th season, and in his third trip to the Finals he wins the elusive ring. Dirk Nowitzki is the 4th player born outside the US to win a Finals MVP joining Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry were the only Mavericks on the team back in 2006 when the Heat shocked the Mavericks in 6 games to win the title.  Dallas flew out to a 2-0 lead and then collapsed, and they weren’t the same for years after that.  Ironically, after the series ended Dwayne Wade was sick of all the complaints about the officiating and called out Nowitzki for being a poor leader in the closing moments of games.  Who would have known how that would foreshadow events some 5 years later?  Sure, Dirk won the League MVP the following year in 2007, and they had the best record in the league and #1 seed in the Western Conference, but they were beaten in the first round by the #8 seed Golden State Warriors.

This kid looks husky to me

I just finished watching the UCONN Huskies win their 3rd National Championship over the Butler Bulldogs 53-41. I may not have an appetite for the next couple days, and for me, that’s saying something. No need to insert a jump here, there wasn’t much to see in this game. Unless you love missed shots.
Credit UCONN’s D, they were bigger and contested every shot. But Butler just plain missed and missed and missed. This game was Lady Gaga ugly.
The fans at Reliant Stadium were pro-Butler, but there wasn’t much to cheer about, especially in the second half.

Butler didn't need 300 men tonight. Just one that could hit a jumper.

Butler had the worst FG % in tournament history at 18.8. They were 9/33 from 3 point range and 3/31 FROM 2 PT RANGE! They were outscored in the paint 26-2. So UCONN brings the National Title back to the Big East. If you DVR’d this game to watch later, don’t bother.

Butler did it again!!

Now we are down to two. The NCAA Division 1 Basketball Tournament, which started with 68 teams 19 days ago…is down to the Final Two. The #3 seed Connecticut Huskies will face the #8 seed Butler Bulldogs on Monday night to determine the National Champion. For the second year in a row a mid-major team is in the Championship Game.  Butler is the lowest seed to play for the National Title since Villanova won it as an 8 seed in 1985.  Somewhere John Thompson II just threw a towel in disgust.
This year’s Final Four included the highest combination of seeds in tournament history. Over the last 25 years the average seed of a Final Four team is 2.5. This year? 6.5, the highest ever.
