Kind of how things have been going for the Marlins lately

The Braves beat the Marlins Thursday night and sent them to their 8th straight loss. SP Jair Jurrjens improved to 8-2 going 7 innings and allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks & 2 Ks. Jonny Venters picked up his second save as Craig Kimbrel threw 28 pitches on Wednesday night. Venters now owns an ERA of 0.47 & a WHIP of 0.72 on the season.  OF Martin Prado missed another game with his knee injury.

GAME NOTES

Not much on the injury front tonight so I’ll just combine it with the game summaries.

Mets SP Jon Niese went 7 2/3 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits and struck out 8 in the 4-1 win.  Brewers SP Yovani Gallardo gave up 10 hits and 4 runs with a walk & 5 Ks in 5 innings for the loss.  NYM OF Jason Bay had the night off in the midst of an 0-23 slump.

Diamondbacks RP David Hernandez picked up his second save as closer JJ Putz was dealing with lower back stiffness.  Arizona beat the Pirates 2-0.  OF Chris Young went 2-4 with his 12th homer & 2 RBI.

A’s SP Trevor Cahill gave up 6 runs on 8 hits in only 2 2/3 innings as Oakland lost manager Bob Melvin’s debut 9-4 to the White Sox.  A pair of struggling DHs may have woken up tonight as A’s DH Hideki Matsui went 2-4 with a homer & 2 RBI & Chicago DH Adam Dunn went 1-3 with a homer & 2 RBI.

Royals SP Luke Hochevar went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks & 3 Ks as they beat the Blue Jays 3-2.  Toronto SP thew an 8 inning CG giving up 8 hits with 2 walks & 4 Ks.  KC called up another one of their prized prospects, 3B Mike Moustakas from AAA.  I wonder if they will nickname him Mike Dirooki? I know..it’s late.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander went 8 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits with a walk & 10 Ks in the 4-1 win over the Mariners.  Seattle SP Doug Fister had an 8 inning CG giving up 7 hits, 2 walks & 3 Ks.  Detroit OF Brandon Boesch went 2-3 with a double, homer, and 2 RBI.

Big Puma went 2-5 with his 15th homer & 2 RBI in the Cardinals 9-2 win over the Astros.  Houston OF Hunter Pence went 2-4 to extend his career best hitting streak to 20 games.

Twins OF Michael Cuddyer went 2-4 with a homer & 3 RBI in the 5-4 win over the Rangers.  Texas SP Derek Holland got a ND going 7 1/3 and giving up 4 runs on 8 hits with a walk & 10 Ks.  OFs Nelson Cruz & Josh Hamilton both went 2-4 with solo homers in the losing cause.

Rockies rookie SP Juan Nicasio gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings with 1 walk & 4 Ks in the 9-7 loss to the Dodgers.  LA SP Clayton Kershaw gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings.  OF Matt Kemp went 3-5 with a double, triple, and homer along with 3 RBI.  Tulo went 2-5 with a double & 4 RBI for Colorado.

Here’s an example of how NOT to catch a foul ball…

Phillies closer Ryan Madson blew his first save of the year when he gave up a game tying homer to Cubs C Geovany Soto in the top of the 9th.  Chicago went on to win 4-3 in 11 innings.  Philly SS Jimmy Rollins returned from his knee injury with a 3 run homer in 6 ABs.

Padres SP Aaron Harang improved to 7-2 on the season by beating the Nationals 7-3.  He went 6 innings and allowed 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks & 4 Ks.  In his first major league game, SD 1B Anthony (open your fuckin ears jackass) Rizzo hit a triple for his first major league hit. Pretty hard to do.  He also drew 2 walks and scored a run.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto went 7 scoreless giving up 4 hits, 2 walks & 8 Ks in the 3-0 win over the Giants.  SF SP Madison Bumgarner fell to 2-8 on the year.  He went 7 innings and scattered 8 hits, 1 run, 0 walks & 7 Ks.  Decent line in defeat.

Oh and this is how a Dad catches a foul ball…
