Two state songs for Colorado.."Rocky Mountain High" and "Where the Columbines Grow". Wait what? I guess they can't decide what Colorado is best known for...Rocky Mountains...getting high...or Columbine.

Saturday the Colorado Rockies scored a season high 15 runs and bashed a season high 18 hits in a 15-4 home win over the St. Louis Cardinals.  Must be the elevation!  How many homers did Vinnie Castilla hit??  STL SP Jaime Garcia endured his first loss of the season, and he also gave up career highs in hits and runs. He gave up 12 runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings, but only 11 of them were earned.  Great news!  Rockies C Chris Iannetta went 4-5 with 2 homers and a career high 6 RBI. Colorado SP Juan Nicasio won his first major league start, going 7 innings and allowing 6 hits, 0 earned runs, 2 walks and 2 Ks. He was promoted from AA. Cardinals OF Matt Holliday missed his 5th straight game with left quadricep tightness, although he did pinch hit in the 8th inning and flew out.

Twins SP Francisco Liriano had his start skipped Saturday due to shoulder stiffness.  See below for Wally Pipp reference.  Not to be confused with George Zipp of course.

Former Twins closer Joe Nathan was placed on the DL with an elbow injury.  Were all these dudes playing tennis or something?  It is French Open time after all.

Astros SP Wandy Rodriguez was placed on the DL with an elbow injury.  No word on how the Wandy Line will be affected.  Jordan Lyles was called up in his place and he will start Tuesday at Wrigley.  That’s where the Cubs play for our Philly readers.

Orioles SP Brian Matusz is hoping to return from the DL to start Wednesday vs Seattle.

As you read above, Twins SP Francisco Liriano was scratched from his matchup vs Jared Weaver and the Angels Saturday, so Anthony Swarzak stepped in.  All Anthony did was hold LA hitless until OF Peter Bourjos doubled with 1 out in the 8th inning.  That was the only hit the Angels would manage all game.  Swarzak went 8 scoreless innings, walking 2 and whiffing 4.  So I hate to ruin some of the drama, but if your only hit is a double your chances of winning are pretty slim.  But hold now…keep reading. Because Weaver went 9 shutout innings himself, giving up only 2 hits, 2 walks & 7 Ks.  He did not get a CG however, because……the game went into extra innings 0-0.  That left Weaver winless in his last 6 starts, and to make matters worse, the Twins scored in the bottom of the 10th to win 1-0.  Sorry I couldn’t draw it out any longer.  I know the suspense was killing everyone.  The millions AND MILLIONS of my fans of course.

Pirates SP Paul Maholm threw a CG SHO over the Cubs in their 10-0 blowout.  He didn’t walk a batter, and surrendered only 3 hits while striking out 4.

Blue Jays OF and arguably fantasy baseball’s #1 hitter Jose Bautista went 3-4 with a double, 3 runs, 2 walks, 3 RBI, & his major league leading 20th home run in Toronto’s 9-8 win over the White Sox in 14 innings.  Chicago SP Gavin Floyd was forced to come in and pitched the bottom of the 14th and picked up the loss.  Rather interesting considering the White Sox are now cutting down from a 6 man starting rotation to 5.  Oh, Ozzie!!

Zach Duke made his Arizona Diamondbacks debut and picked up his 1st win of the season in the 11-3 drubbing of the Astros.  He went 7 scoreless innings, giving up 3 hits, a walk & 4 Ks.

Braves C Brian McCann went 4-5 with 2 solo homers in Atlanta’s 7-6 win over the slumping Reds in 12 innings.

Phillies SP Cole Hamels improved to 7-2 in beating the Mets 5-2.  He went 7 innings, scattering 7 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks & 10 Ks.

A’s SP Josh Outman picked up his first win since beating the Twins on June 8, 2009.  2B Mark Ellis went 2-4 with his first homer of the season.  Interesting that RP Grant Balfour came in to pitch the 8th and embattled closer Brian Fuentes pitched the 9th and notched his 10th save in the 4-2 win over the Orioles.

The Red Sox & Tigers were rained out on Saturday and will play a doubleheader on Sunday.
