Saturday, August 29, 1998 seems like just yesterday....for some of us

A big night in Philadelphia Monday night. A hero made his long-awaited return in front of friends and family. Oh and Phillies 2B Chase Utley came off the DL too. Reds prospect and star of the 1998 Little League World Series Champions, Todd Frazier made his major league debut. He went from Little League to star for the Toms River South Indians and then played 3 years at Rutgers University. He was the 34th pick in the 2007 draft for the Reds. On Monday night he didn’t start, but he came in as a pinch hitter and struck out. How did Utley do you ask? He went 0-5 with a K in his first game back. The rest of the Phillies did much better, knocking Cincy SP Bronson Arroyo from the game after giving up 9 runs & 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

The Nationals placed 1B Adam LaRoche on the DL with a shoulder injury.

The Reds sent SP Edinson Volquez to AAA.  As much for his pitching as well as his attitude for criticizing the Reds’ offense after his loss on Sunday.

Indians Asdrubal Cabrera stayed white-hot on Monday night going 3-4 with a double, homer & 2 RBI.  He now has 8 hits in his last 9 ABs with 3 homers and 7 RBI.

Dodgers OF Andre Ethier didn’t start the game, but came in and delivered a pinch hit single.  Rookie Kenley Jansen was given the chance to close the game and gave up 3 runs, 3 hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning to blow the save and take the loss.

Tigers OF Andy Dirks hit the first homer of his career in the 6-3 win over the Rays.

Blue Jays C JP Arencibia went 2-4 with a 2B & 4 RBI in Toronto’s 7-3 win over the Yankees.  Jose Bautista went 1-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs, and his major league leading 19th homer of the season.  Yankees SP Bartolo Colon gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings.

Rangers OF Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz came off the DL today and guess what else?  They both homered!  And guess what else?  The Rangers won.  Hamilton went 2-4 with a solo homer and Cruz went 1-4 with a 2-run homer.  The big story today though was rookie SP Alexi Ogando improving to 5-0 on the season.  He pitched a CG SHO over the White Sox.  He gave up 5 hits, 3 walks & 6 Ks.  Losing pitcher John Danks fell to 0-7 on the season.  He threw a CG as well giving up 9 hits and 4 runs with 2 walks & 3 Ks.

Brewers OF Corey Hart hit his first homer of the season Monday night.  And you know what else?  He stole a base.  And you know what else?  Well he didn’t just end there…he went 3-4 with 3 homers & 7 RBIs.  SP Yovani Gallardo went 7 innings and gave up 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk & 9 Ks.  Nationals SP Tom Gorzelanny took the loss giving up 8 hits & 6 runs in 5 innings.

Twins DH Jim Thome had 2 homers & 4 RBI in their extra inning loss to the Mariners.
