New face of baseball?? He's likely relegated back to pinch hitting duty after tonight...

Joe Blanton was supposed to start Thursday night’s game against the Rockies. He was scratched from this start due to elbow soreness. The same elbow that landed him on the DL earlier this season. Kyle Kendrick took his place. For the Rockies, 1B Todd Helton tweaked his back sliding into home plate on Wednesday night, so Jason Giambi and his .194 average on the season took his place. It is now where we enter THE TWILIGHT ZONE. The Rockies won the game 7-1. Kendrick gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 3 innings. But that’s not the story here. 35 year old Jason Giambi hit 3 homers and had 7 RBIs. Wait what? He tied his career high in RBIs and became the 2nd oldest player in MLB history to hit 3 homers in a game. It was also his first hit since April 10th.

INJURY NEWS

Cardinals OF Matt Holliday missed Thursday’s game against the Astros but will most likely be in the lineup on Friday.  OF Lance Berkman on the other hand, is day to day.  And rounding out the Cardinals MASH unit of an outfield, Colby Rasmus is back on Thursday.  Got it?  I think it’s easier to remember what the different color zones in an airport are for.

A’s SP Tyson Ross made it thru 7 pitches before leaving the game with a left oblique strain.  To literally add insult to injury, he took the loss in the game.

Dodgers interim – and I use the term loosely – closer Vincente Padilla was placed on the DL with a forearm injury.  Look for Matt Guerrier to take over closing duties.  Jonathan Broxton is as close to taking over as Andy Bernard is to managing Dunder Mifflin.

Orioles 2B Brian Roberts was placed on the 7…yes 7-day DL with the new concussion mandate put into effect this year.  Will be interesting to see if Yankee OF Chris Dickerson ends up there as well.

Brewers OF Ryan Braun left Thursday night’s game with a sore left shoulder.

Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez left Thursday’s game with left groin tightness.  They are calling him day to day.

Phillies OF Shane Victorino will likely hit the DL on Friday with a bad hammy.

In some good news…FINALLY!  Rangers OF Josh Hamilton is hoping to return Monday.  They are saying the same for OF Nelson Cruz.  Check Vegas for the lines on who returns first….

GAME NOTES

Cardinals SP Kyle McClellan improved to 6-1 after beating the Astros Thursday afternoon.  He went 8 innings, gave up 5 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks & 5 Ks.  Closer Fernando Salas picked up his 5th save.

Mets SP Dillon Gee had a no hitter thru 6 innings today.  He’s now 3-0 on the season after they squeaked by the Nationals 1-0.  He went 7 innings and gave up 2 hits.  Tough luck loser Livan Hernandez went 7 innings, giving up 7 hits, 1 run, 2 walks & 7 Ks.

Pirates SP James McDonald went 6 2/3 innings and gave up 7 hits, a run, a walk and 4 Ks in their 5-3 victory over the Reds.  Cincy OF Jay Bruce went 3-4 with 2 solo bombs.

White Sox SP Gavin Floyd was back in the win column after going 7 innings and giving up 1 run on 5 hits with a walk and 3 Ks in their victory over the Indians.  Cleveland SP Fausto Carmona was roughed up for 8 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings.

Yankees SP CC Sabathia went 8 shutout innings in the Yankees rout of the Orioles.  He gave up 7 hits with 0 walks and 9 Ks.  Jorge Posada played 1B as Mark Teixeira DH’d.  Jorge went 1-3 with a 2B & RBI.  Fellow struggling slugger (say that 3 times fast!) Nick Swisher went 2-4 with a double, run, and 4 RBIs.

Rangers closer Neftali Feliz has blown 2 saves in a row.  He ruined a masterful performance by Derek Holland on Thursday night.  Holland went 8 innings, scattering 9 hits and giving up a run, a walk, and 5 Ks.  Royals SP Luke Hochevar received a no decision as well.  He went 8 2/3 giving up a run on 6 hits with 2 walks & 4 Ks.  Rookie sensation Eric Hosmer started the comeback with a single off Feliz in the 9th.  The Royals ended up winning 2-1 in the 10th inning.

The Diamondbacks handed Braves SP Jair Jurrjens his first loss of the season Thursday night with the 2-1 win.  SP Josh Collmenter went 6 shutout innings allowing only 2 hits and 0 walks.  Only 1 strikeout though.  C’mon guy!

Angels 2B Howie Kendrick went 3-4 and homered for their only run of the game in the 2-1 loss to Seattle.  SP Dan Haren got a ND for going 8 innings and giving up only 3 hits and a run, but 4 walks & 5 Ks.  Mariners SP Doug Fister took a ND as well, he went 8 innings, giving up a run on 6 hits with 2 walks & 2 Ks.

Brewers SP Chris Narveson went 7 1/3 shutout innings against the Padres.  He gave up 5 hits with a walk and 4 Ks but got a ND.  As did SD SP Aaron Harang…he went 8 shutout innings and scattered 6 hits, 2 walks & 4 Ks.  Fresh off the DL, Padres 2B Orlando Hudson won the game 1-0 for SD & Heath Bell with a sac fly in the bottom of the 9th.
