Pirates CF Andrew McCutcheon was benched on Thursday for failing to hustle out a ground ball on Wednesday night.  The Pirates game against the Dodgers Thursday night was rained out anyway.

Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia improved to 5-0 after beating the Cubs.  He went 7 innings and scattered 9 hits allowing 1 run, 1 walk & 4 Ks.  Eduardo Sanchez was given the moniker of  “Closer” for the time being.  Let’s see if this lasts longer than one of Kirstie Alley’s diets.

Yankees 2B Robinson Cano homered in his return to the lineup after being beaned in the head Wednesday night.  His 1-4 night wasn’t enough to stop the Royals from beating the Yankees 11-5.  SP Ivan Nova went 3 innings and gave up 10 hits and 8 runs (only 4 earned).  Royals rookie 1B Eric Hosmer hit his second homer in as many nights.  He also added an RBI double during his 3-5 night.  DH Billy Butler went 4-6 with a double and 2 RBI in the Royals balanced offensive attack.

Mariners SP Jason Vargas & Orioles rookie Zach Britton both went 9 scoreless innings Thursday night.  The Orioles won 2-1 in the 12th as Mariners closer Brandon League blew his 2nd save in as many nights.  Vargas went 9 shutout innings giving up 7 hits, 1 walk & 4 Ks.  Britton only gave up 3 hits, 0 walks & 5 Ks.

Down on the farm….Padres 1B Anthony Rizzo (No relation to Frank) is tearing up AAA pitching to the tune of a .393 batting average with 10 homers and 43 RBIs in 31 games.  Wait what?  Yeah you read that right.  If you look at the Padres current 1B Brad Hawpe & Jorge Cantu and see they are hovering around the Mendoza Line…it’s pretty easy to say What the H?
