Tough times down south

Phillies SP Roy Oswalt left the team on Wednesday to make sure his family was safe in Mississippi. (Thanks to my daughter for helping me spell that). Oswalt started on Tuesday night and only pitched 3 innings. He suffered his first loss since 7/30/10. He was reported to have spent a lot of time before the game on the phone. His parents home was demolished by a tornado last year. No word on whether he will be back in time for his next start.

In other Phillies battery news not having to do with JD Drew, catcher Carlos Ruiz left the game Wednesday with lower back pain.

A’s C Kurt Suzuki missed the game Wednesday to be present for the birth of his daughter.  Congratulations Kurt!

Nationals SS Ian Desmond will miss several games as he is out on paternity leave.  Congratulations are in order for Ian as well.

Twins OF Delmon Young will be going on the DL for a rib injury.

Dodgers OF Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a double, and then hit the game winning homer in the 10th inning.  Juan Uribe returned to the lineup…well sort of.  He hit a pinch hit RBI double in the 7th inning to tie the game at that point.  In perhaps the craziest news of the day not involving Lindsay Lohan, Vincente Padilla recorded the save for the Dodgers.  That sound you hear is all Jonathan Broxton owners fainting at once.

Brewers SP Yovani Gallardo gave up 6 runs and 10 hits in 5 innings of work on Wednesday to Cincy.

Padres ace Mat Latos fell to 0-4 on the season after giving up 7 hits and 6 runs(but only 1 earned) in 5 innings in a loss to the Braves.  Opposing starter Tommy Hanson went 7 innings giving up no runs and striking out 10 for the W.

Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols was back in the STARTING lineup on Wednesday.  He did pinch hit Tuesday night.  He went 1-4 with an RBI in support of Kyle Lohse, who went 7 shutout innings giving up only 4 hits to get the victory over Houston.

Diamondbacks OF Chris Young went 2-4 with 2 homers and 3 RBIs in a loss to the Phillies.  SS Jimmy Rollins had a double, a homer, and 3 RBI.  Coming into today he had 2 RBIs the entire season(23 games).  Winning pitcher Cole Hamels went 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with 8 Ks.  Losing pitcher Joe Saunders gave up 6 runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 IP.

Twins SP Francisco Liriano was roughed up again.  He gave up 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in only 3 innings of work.

Yankees SP BFBC got the win over the White Sox Wednesday night.  Colon went 8 innings and gave up 7 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 6 Ks.

The Rockies/Cubs game was rained out.  It will be made up at a later date.  Sometime at the end of June my sources tell me.
