Is Tony La Russa signaling us that he plans to use 3 closers??

Tony La Russa pulled Ryan Franklin (I almost wrote Rich!) from the closer role today. He didn’t mention a possible replacement. Possible suspects include : Mitchell Boggs, Jason Motte, Miguel Batista, and Bruce Sutter. OK one of those names doesn’t belong. But you have about a good a guess as what TLR is going to do as I do.

More Injury News

Tigers C Victor Martinez was placed on the 15 day DL due to a right groin strain.

Cardinals 2B Skip Schumaker was placed on the 15 day DL due to a right bicep strain.

Twins 1B Justin Morneau remained out Tuesday night recovering from the flu.

Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez missed Tuesday night’s game as well with continuing back and oblique stiffness.

Indians OF Grady Sizemore was rested on Tuesday after playing 2 games in a row.  No need to risk anything.

Mariners 1B Justin Smoak was placed on the bereavement list and will miss 7-10 days.

Reds 2B Brandon Phillips returned Tuesday night and went 2-4 with a 2B, R, and RBI.

Rockies ace Ubaldo Jiminez returned to the mound Tuesday.  He went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits.  In order to make room for him on the roster, they optioned IF Ian Stewart to AAA.

Blue Jays RP Frank Francisco was activated off the DL, but it remains to be seen how soon he will take over the closer role from Big Jon Rauch.

Toronto SP Brandon Morrow will come off the DL on Saturday.

Angels SS Erick Aybar will return to the lineup on Wednesday.


SD/Chi & Wash/Stl were both rained out on Tuesday and will play doubleheaders Wed.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera hadn’t let up  a run or even walked a batter all season.  Until Tuesday.  Til Tuesday?  He blew the save against the Blue Jays giving up 4 hits, a walk and 2 runs.  The Yankees ended up losing the game in the 10th.

Diamondbacks OF Ryan Roberts went 2-3 with 2 homers and 3 RBI.  OF Drew Stubbs had the Fantasy Daily Double of a homer and a stolen base for the Reds.

Rays SP James Shields outdueled White Sox SP John Danks on Tuesday night.  Shields threw a CG 4 hitter allowing 1 R, 1 BB and whiffing 9.  Danks went 7 innings allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, 0 BBs & 5 Ks.

The Orioles bombed the Twins 11-0.  Winning pitcher Jake Arrieta pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball allowing 4 hits.  On the losing end Carl Pavano gave up 7 runs on 8 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Phillies ace Roy Halladay got rocked by the Brewers 9-0.  He gave up 6 runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Marlins star Josh Johnson got the W on Tuesday going 7 innings and only giving up 2 hits, with 0 runs, 1 BB and 9 Ks.

The Angels roughed up the Rangers 15-4.  Rookies Peter Bourjos & Mark Trumbo had huge games.  Bourjos was 4-5 with a 2B, HR, 3 R, and 3 RBI.  Trumbo was 3-5 with a 2B, HR, 2 R, and 4 RBI.

A’s SP Brett Anderson shut out the Red Sox.  He went 8 innings only giving up 4 hits and a walk while striking out 8.  Boston SP John Lackey actually pitched well for a change giving up 4 hits and 1 run in 6 innings.

Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki was 4-5 with 3 runs, 2 RBI & 2 SBs.  IF Chone Figgins went 3-4 with 3 runs, a 2B, 3 RBI & a SB.

Braves OF Jason Heyward was 0-5 in the 2 hole Tuesday night.  He’s now 0-9 since he was moved up in the order.
