Jered Weaver celebrates after being named Fantasy Star of the Day by FB2K on PlaxicoAgrees.com

Jered Weaver is the Fantasy Star of the Day today. He fanned a career high 15 in 7 2/3 innings of 1 run ball. He’s now 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA on the season and an early candidate for AL Cy Young.

Now for some more injury news and game notes from a full Sunday of MLB action…

Angels SS Erick Aybar was placed on the 15 day DL

Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman has an abdominal strain.  No word at this time about a DL stint.

Giants OF Andres Torres has a strained achilles.

Padres ace Mat Latos is coming off the DL and starting against the Reds on Monday.

Braves SP Jair Jurrgens is looking at returning next weekend.

Orioles neophyte Zach Britton had his start pushed to Friday to avoid the Yankees.  He instead will go against Cleveland…they won their 7th straight game Sunday night by the way.  Jake Arrieta will take on the Yankees Thursday.  Based on Sunday night’s 2 hit performance, not sure who got the shortest straw there.  Ask James Hetfield.  SS JJ Hardy will have an MRI on Monday.  PlaxicoAgrees.com will be the second person to know the results and we’ll post them ASAP.  Speaking of ASAP I can’t believe the girls won!

Sunday performances :

Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels bounced back from that atrocious performance against the Mets pitching 7 innings of shutout ball while giving up 4 hits and a walk with 8 Ks while beating the Braves.  The Flyin Hawaiian Shane Victorino stayed hot with his fifth multi-hit game in a row.

Rangers SP Derek Holland pitched the Rangers to the best record in all of baseball with 6 innings of shutout ball.  He gave up 5 hits, 2 walks and 6 Ks in the Rangers win over the Orioles.  The Rangers have matched their best start in franchise history at 8-1.

Astros SP JA Happ helped his own cause today at the plate going 2-3 with 2 RBIs.  He also pitched 7 2/3 innings of one run ball giving up 4 hits, 4 walks and 5 Ks.  Opposing him for the Marlins, Anibel “Dirty” Sanchez had a rough day giving up 13 hits and 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings.

White Sox SP Gavin Floyd pitched 8 innings of shutout ball against the Rays to get the win today.  He gave up 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8.  The Rays scored 1 run yet again while falling to 1-8.  1B Paul Konerko hit 2 solo homers to lead Chicago.

Padres SP Aaron Harang beat the Dodgers today with 6 innings of 3 hit, 1 ER ball.  He’s 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA for the Padres so far.  In a losing effort, Matt Kemp of the Dodgers stole his 6th base of the season in 6 attempts.  Guess the breakup with Rihanna is helping him.

OF Matt Holliday returned to the Cardinals lineup today going 1-3 with a RBI & run scored.  SP Kyle Lohse went 8 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits with 5 Ks to get the W.

Reds SP Mike Leake got knocked around for 6 runs on 9 hits in 4 2/3 innings on Sunday.  The Reds offense bailed him out, and actually had the lead in the 8th until Diamondbacks OF Chris Young hit a 3 run homer to give the D’Backs the win.

Mariners SP Erik Bedard gave up 10 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings in their loss today.  He shouldn’t be owned.

Red Sox SP Josh Beckett bounced back against his nemesis the Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball.  After owning a 10.04 ERA against them in 5 starts last year, he confounded them by shutting them out for 8 innings.  He only allowed 2 hits while striking out 10.  He ended his outing by retiring 14 straight Yankees.  Only 2 of their outs left the infield.

Giants rookie sensation 1B Brandon Belt who FB2K has heralded before is now hitting .161.  It’s a possibility he gets sent down to the minors when OF Cody Ross comes off the DL.  They need to get Aubrey Huff out of the OF.  Stay tuned.

Closer News :

The White Sox are going to a committee.  Matt Thornton and Chris Sale are both lefties, so it’s going to be hard to determine who will be used when.  Probably the next one to stop getting rocked will distance himself from the competition.

Cardinals maligned closer Ryan Franklin got the dreaded vote of confidence from Tony LaRussa. We’ll see how that goes.  No one else in that bullpen has really stepped up to take that job away from him.  Keep an eye on Jason Motte.

Giants closer Brian Wilson has a 33.75 ERA since coming off the DL.  They might move him out of the closer role for a few days, or at least try to get him in some non-save situations so he can right his ship.

Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton hasn’t been pretty, but he has 5 saves in 5 chances.

Speaking of committees, Fernando Rodney saved the game Sunday for the Angels.
